Temp Mail (temp-mail.org) alternative: GrabMail vs Temp Mail

Temp Mail at temp-mail.org is the biggest consumer temp-mail site there is: apps on every platform, a Telegram bot, a Premium plan at $10 a month and an API sold through RapidAPI. GrabMail is a public inbox with a keyless API, your own domain and an MCP server, free. Facts read on temp-mail.org’s own pages on 2 September 2026, with the section on where Temp Mail wins.

At a glance

Fourteen rows. Every Temp Mail cell is what temp-mail.org’s pages, its Terms and its RapidAPI listing said on 2 September 2026; every GrabMail cell is read from the constants the service enforces. “Partly” means a paid tier, a cap, or a caveat the row cannot hold — the sections below say which.

Checked 2 September 2026. Temp Mail’s Premium price is filled in by its payment provider at page load and reads $10 a month or $60 a year before tax; the site labels the annual plan “Save 50%”. Its public-domain count, attachment size and free-tier inbox privacy are not published, and the cells say so.

What Temp Mail does well

Temp Mail is the site most people mean when they say “temp mail”, and it has earned that. Four things it does that GrabMail does not:

  • It is everywhere you are. An iPhone app, an Android app, an Amazon app, Chrome and Firefox extensions, a Telegram bot and a Slack app, all linked from its own footer. GrabMail is a website and a Chrome extension you load by hand.
  • Premium buys a real mailbox. $10 a month, or $60 a year, gets up to ten addresses at once, 100MB of storage, dedicated premium domains, a custom domain and no ads. A person who uses temp mail daily gets a product; GrabMail’s paid plan is for developers who need off-blocklist domains.
  • A commercial API with a free tier. Through RapidAPI, 100 requests a day cost nothing and $19 a month buys 5,000 a month, with attachment endpoints and a 30-requests-a-second ceiling. It is a paid product with a marketplace behind it.
  • Blocked names that protect you. Mail to abuse@, postmaster@, admin@ and similar is refused, so nobody can read a role address on a public domain. GrabMail relies on the alias for that.

Where GrabMail is different

GrabMail is built for the two things a consumer temp-mail site is worst at: keeping the mail long enough to be useful, and being driven by something that is not a person.

  • 5 days, not two hours. Temp Mail says it deletes “within 1-2 hours”. Here every message lives 5 days, enforced by a job, on the public domains and on yours. The confirmation link you open tonight is still there; the receipt from yesterday is still there.
  • Any address, free. Type orders@grabmail.io and it is an inbox; Temp Mail assigns the address and sells choosing one for $10 a month. A name you chose is a name you can remember and reuse.
  • A keyless API and an MCP server. Temp Mail’s API lives behind a RapidAPI account, a key and a daily quota. GrabMail’s is a GET with the address in it, and its MCP server lets an agent open an inbox and wait for a message with nothing to sign up for. The reference is three endpoints.
  • Your own domain, free, and no ads anywhere. One MX record at smtp.grabmail.io makes any domain a catch-all inbox — Temp Mail includes that in Premium. And there is no ad, no analytics and no third-party script on any GrabMail page, free or paid.

Price, side by side

Temp Mail’s Premium is in US dollars before tax, monthly or yearly; its API is priced by RapidAPI in monthly plans. GrabMail’s only paid plan buys access to a pool of domains kept off the disposable-mail blocklists; everything in the table above stays free.

For developers: reading a mailbox

The whole difference in one command. This reads a GrabMail mailbox with no header, no key and no account:

shell
$ curl -sG https://grabmail.io/api/v1/mailbox --data-urlencode "address=anything@grabmail.io" | jq '{count, alias}'

Temp Mail’s API is GET /request/mail/id/{md5}/ on RapidAPI, where the id is the MD5 of the address and every call carries a RapidAPI key against a daily or monthly quota. It works, and it costs from $19 a month past 100 calls a day. GrabMail’s three endpoints are documented in the reference; the Python and Node.js guides show a wait loop with a deadline.

One habit matters here: Temp Mail’s domains change (“the domains may be the subject for change”, in its Terms), so a script has to fetch the current list first. GrabMail’s 8 public domains are fixed, and a domain of your own never changes under you.

For AI agents

Temp Mail publishes no MCP server and no llms.txt; an agent would need a RapidAPI key and a quota. GrabMail’s server at https://grabmail.io/mcp gives an agent an inbox with no key: create_inbox, a blocking wait_for_message of up to 25 seconds, read_message.

For an agent that must sign itself up somewhere, that removes the one step it cannot do alone. Email for AI agents covers the loop; the client guide has the configuration for Claude, Cursor and five others.

Switching from Temp Mail

For a person, the switch is a bookmark. For a script or a Premium subscriber, it is four steps:

  1. Pick a name instead of taking one. Open the front page, type any local part on grabmail.io, mixozia.com or another of the 8 public domains, and use it. There is no generator to refresh and no timer to extend.
  2. Move a Premium domain. Change its MX record from Temp Mail’s to smtp.grabmail.io, priority 10. It becomes a catch-all inbox here for free, with no dashboard to register it in. The domain page shows the record.
  3. Replace the RapidAPI calls. /request/mail/id/{md5}/ becomes grabmail.io/api/v1/mailbox?address=… with no key; the message body is one more GET. Drop the domain-list call: the domains do not rotate.
  4. Keep the app if you need one. GrabMail has no mobile app; the site works on a phone and the Chrome extension fills forms. If the Telegram bot is how you use temp mail, that is a reason to stay.

Which one, for what

The honest split is by who is reading the mail:

Pick GrabMail when

  • a script, a test suite or an agent reads the mail, and must not hold a key;
  • you want to choose the address, keep the mail for days, or use your own domain for free;
  • you do not want ads, trackers or an upsell on the page.

Pick Temp Mail when

  • you want a native app, a Telegram bot or a Slack app;
  • a two-hour lifetime is what you want from a throwaway address;
  • a paid consumer mailbox with 100MB, premium domains and support is worth $10 a month.

When to stay with Temp Mail

Three situations where switching would cost you something real:

  • You live in the app. Temp Mail’s iOS and Android apps, its extensions and its bots are the product. GrabMail has a website and a hand-loaded extension, and nothing on a phone’s home screen.
  • You want the mail gone fast. Two hours is a feature for somebody who never wants to see a message again. GrabMail keeps mail 5 days unless you delete it, and every mailbox is readable by anyone who knows the address.
  • You pay for Premium and use the private domains. Dedicated premium domains with a private address are a consumer product GrabMail does not sell; its paid pool is API-only and for developers.

Questions

Is GrabMail a free alternative to Temp Mail?

Yes for the address, the inbox, the API and your own domain, all of which are free with no account. It has no mobile app, no bot and no premium consumer mailbox, which are Temp Mail’s strengths.

How long does Temp Mail keep messages?

One to two hours, in its own words on its API page and in its Terms. GrabMail keeps every message 5 days, enforced by a job, on the public domains and on yours.

Can I choose my own address on Temp Mail?

Only with Premium, at $10 a month or $60 a year; the free site generates the address. On GrabMail any name works on the public domains and on yours, free.

Does Temp Mail have an API?

Yes, through RapidAPI: a free BASIC plan of 100 requests a day, then $19, $59 and $99 a month, each call carrying a RapidAPI key. GrabMail’s API needs no key and has no daily count; the limit is one read a second per address.

Which one works with AI agents?

GrabMail runs a free keyless MCP server with a blocking wait_for_message. Temp Mail publishes no MCP server; an agent would need a RapidAPI key and a quota. The client guide has the GrabMail configuration.
